Don Lemon Says Donald Trump and His Allies Are 'Dreaming of a Coup'
CNN host Don Lemon criticized President Donald Trump on Monday for his continued refusal to accept the results of the 2020 presidential election as Inauguration Day looms.
Lemon pointed to recent efforts by Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert, a staunch ally of the president, who is suing Vice President Mike Pence in a longshot bid to overturn the election results.
Showing footage of recent comments by President-elect Joe Biden about the Trump administration's failure to co-operate with his transition team on key issues, Lemon explained that Trump will be in office for just 23 more days as of Monday.
"He doesn't really care about sending $2,000 checks to desperate Americans," Lemon said. "All he cares about—absolutely all he cares about is not looking like a loser.
"But in his efforts not to look like a loser, he is looking like a loser. He's doing exactly what he doesn't want to do.
"That's why he's still pushing the delusional idea that there is some way that he could override the will of the people when Congress meets to affirm Joe Biden's win on January 6," Lemon said.
"Well the president of the United States, he's dreaming of a coup, right? That's why his minions like Congressman Louie Gohmert, that's why they're suing. They're suing the vice president of the United States right now, Mike Pence.
"Suing Pence in a ludicrous attempt to get the vice president to ignore the electoral votes from the five states that the president claims that he won.
"That he actually didn't win. We know he lost them. And he lost them over and over and over again. And then he keeps losing them, thereby making Joe Biden win over and over and over again."
The lawsuit, led by Gohmert, seeks to have Pence reject the Electoral College votes from Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin—all states Biden won. The suit argues there is "substantial evidence of election fraud and other illegal conduct" but does not appear to provide proof. The president and some of his allies have made unsubstantiated allegations of mass voter fraud for weeks.
"He also lost the popular vote," Lemon said. "He lost the Electoral College vote as well. He lost the courts. It is really, really pathetic. He's so desperate to avoid looking like a loser that he repeatedly argues that the votes of the American people should be thrown out. By doing that, he's looking like a loser."
