Video of Donald Trump Asking Crowd for Applause at Mar-a-Lago Viewed 500k Times

A clip of Donald Trump asking for applause from guests at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida has gone viral.

The 10-second clip was posted to the Twitter page PatriotTakes on Sunday and has been viewed over 500,000 times. It is not clear when the video was recorded or who filmed it.

The clip was captioned: "Trump asking for applause from the Mar-a-Lago brunch crowd. Sad."

The video showed the former president raising both of his arms up and spinning them at the guests before receiving cheers and applause. He then responded by giving a thumbs-up to the crowd before walking off.

Some of those reacting on social media made reference to a similar incident with 2016 Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush.

PatriotTakes referred to this in another tweet that read: "In other words, 'please clap,' same energy as Jeb Bush.

"Donald Trump as Jeb Bush in the Musical 'Phantom of the Gold Course' #PleaseClap," comedian Hal Sparks tweeted alongside the video.

"You hate to see it...A year ago he was getting standing ovations... now he has to beg for them to clap," journalist Sarah Burris tweeted.

"Even Jeb Bush wouldn't clap for this," wrote author Grant Stern.

"Jimmy Carter builds houses for the poor. Clinton has a foundation. Bush has a think tank and paints portraits of veterans. Obama has a foundation. Trump begs for applause at brunch at his gaudy golf club," political campaign consultant Fred Wellman tweeted in response to the video.

Bush's "please clap" moment resulted in online mockery as well following a campaign speech he made.

"So here is my pledge to you, I will be a commander in chief that will have the back of the military," Bush said in a speech in February 2016.

He continued: "I won't trash talk, I won't be a divider-in-chief or an agitator-in-chief. I won't be out there blowharding, talking a big game without backing it up.

"I think the next president needs to be a lot quieter but send a signal that we are prepared to act in the national security interests of this country. To get back in the business of creating a more peaceful world."

After being met with silence from the crowd, Bush let out a loud sigh and asked the crowd to "please clap."

At the time, Bush's spokesperson, Kristy Campbell, told BuzzFeed News, who covered the story, the event had been mischaracterized.

"It was clear Governor Bush was cracking a joke with the audience, who laughed and enjoyed the humor," Kristy Campbell said.

Newsweek has contacted Trump's office for comment.
