Donald Trump Cannot Wrap His Mind Around the Fact He's a Loser: Mary Trump

Commenting on the outtakes of Donald Trump's speech on January 7, 2021 shown by the Jan. 6 committee last week, political commentator Mary Trump, a niece of the former president, said she was surprised by two things: that Trump managed to contain his rage to that level and that he couldn't pronounce the word "yesterday".

But one thing didn't surprise her, she said: that Trump was "incapable of admitting that the election was over."

"It wasn't surprising [...] because, one, he cannot wrap his mind around the fact that he's a loser and two, that wouldn't serve his purposes," Mary Trump said during her podcast "The Mary Trump Show".

"He needs his sycophants, his followers and his cult members to believe that the fight is ongoing."

Newsweek has asked Donald Trump for comment.

Mary Trump has previously said that the "walls are closing in" on the former president as the Jan. 6 committee brings forward mounting evidence against him. A couple of weeks ago, she said her uncle was "terrified" after former White House Counsel Pat Cipollone was questioned by the House committee.

"I think this might be the first time in his entire life that even he can't deny the walls that are closing in," she said in an interview with "The Katie Phang Show" on MSNBC.

"The amount of evidence that we see coming out of these committee hearings is overwhelming."

Investigations into what happened on the day of the Capitol riots continue, as a federal grand jury called in Marc Short, former chief of staff to ex-Vice President Mike Pence—who was at the Capitol on the day of siege— for questions, according to reports which date the session back to last week.

It is unclear what he was asked about.

In her analysis of the latest Jan. 6 committee hearing, Mary Trump also touched upon other evidence brought forward during the session, including surveillance footage of Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, running away from the Capitol only hours after greeting the mob outside the building.

"Hawley showed us who he truly was on Jan. 6," she said. "He riled up that mob while he was in his safe space by throwing them a salute. And yet, only a couple of hours later, after that very mob that he helped incite entered the Capitol building, he ran away."

She said "it was a beautiful thing to see the presidential ambition of this supercilious fascist slime implode in one short GIF," but complained that the fact that Hawley is still fundraising off the gesture he made to the pro-Trump crowd on Jan. 6 (printed on merchandise available on his website) "underscores how dangerous the times in which we live are."
