Why It Matters

Trump's speech came as he faces negative approval ratings in the polls and pressure to stabilize the economy ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections.

The memes show that while the American public are politically engaged, some see politics in a lighthearted way.

What To Know

In his speech, Trump criticized former president Joe Biden and claimed he "inherited a mess" that he was "fixing."

He said that there will be a new Federal Reserve chair announced early in the new year to succeed Jerome Powell and celebrated his immigration crackdown.

"For the past seven months, zero illegal aliens have been allowed into our country, a feat which everyone said was absolutely impossible. Do you remember when Joe Biden said that he needed Congress to pass legislation to help close the border?" Trump said.

He also promised tax cut benefits in 2026 that will save families "between $11,000 and $20,000 a year" and said he is making "record breaking" economic progress and bringing down prices that will help consumers.

Posting on social media, one X user said: "This presidential address could have been an email."

Another posted a GIF which read: "I'm unable to control the pitch or volume of my voice."

Another posted an image which said: "Promise everything, deliver nothing, blame someone else."

A fourth posted a "Trump's speech bingo" card which predicted themes the president would raise including "trillions in tariffs" and "ended woke."

And another X user posted a mock newspaper with the headline: "President Trump expected to rename San Andreas Fault to Joe Biden's fault."

However, his supporters celebrated the speech with political commentator Gunther Eagleman writing: "History was made tonight" and another account saying: "The short version of Trump's address tonight was perfect."

What People Are Saying

Trump said in his speech: "Over the past 11 months, we have brought more positive change to Washington than any administration in American history. There has never been anything like it. I think most would agree."

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin said in a statement: "Donald Trump has lost the economy, is losing his mind, and is going to lose the midterms. Tonight, Americans watched him and asked themselves: This is the guy in charge?"

What Happens Next

As his presidency continues, social media users will likely poke fun at the president in response to his public appearances.

He is expected to hit the campaign trail ahead of the November 2026 midterms in support of the Republican Party.
