Donald Trump Calls William Barr 'Big Disappointment' Over Knowledge of a Hunter Biden Investigation

President Donald Trump criticized Attorney General William Barr in a number of tweets on Saturday following a report in The Wall Street Journal which claimed Barr knew about an investigation of Hunter Biden's finances, but worked to keep it from the public during the election.

Biden, President-elect Joe Biden's son, was a major part of Trump's campaign messaging in this year's presidential election. Trump repeatedly made unsubstantiated claims about Biden's foreign business dealings.

On Saturday, Trump shared a tweet from columnist columnist Todd Starnes calling for Barr to removed and followed up with harsh comments of his own about the attorney general he appointed.

"If the Wall Street Journal story is true and Attorney General Barr knew in the spring about the Biden investigation and kept it quiet -- he should be fired by the end of business today," Starnes wrote.

"A big disappointment!" Trump wrote in response to Starnes.

A few minutes later, Trump offered his own critical view of Barr, who has previously been accused of being too loyal to the president.

"IF Biden gets in, nothing will happen to Hunter or Joe. Barr will do nothing, and the new group of partisan killers coming in will quickly kill it all," the president wrote.

"Same thing with [Special Counsel John] Durham. We caught them cold, spying, treason & more (the hard part), but 'Justice' took too long. Will be DOA!"

Durham has been conducting a probe under the aegis of the Department of Justice which some supporters of the president believed would reveal damning details about the origin of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into alleged links between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Conservatives who initially lauded Durham have been subsequently disappointed with his lack of results and some criticism has been levied at Barr as a result, though the investigation is ongoing.

"Why didn't Bill Barr reveal the truth to the public, before the Election, about Hunter Biden," Trump went on. "Joe was lying on the debate stage that nothing was wrong, or going on - Press confirmed. Big disadvantage for Republicans at the polls!"

Accusations levied against Hunter Biden during the campaign have not been substantiated and the president-elect's son has said he believes an investigation will clear him of wrongdoing.

"I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors," Biden said in a statement.
