Will 'Cyberpunk 2077' Gameplay Include Multiplayer?

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red had a lot to say about its upcoming project during this year's E3 2018. The new trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 even had a secret message hidden in a handful of frames, where the devs emphasized that Cyberpunk 2077 is a true single-player, story-driven RPG."

Does that mean Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely not getting any multiplayer? Not necessarily. In an interview with Eurogamer, quest designer Patrick Mills said, "We have multiplayer in R&D, but the game we're shipping to you, the game you're going to buy is the single-player experience. That's really what we're concentrating on now, the single-player RPG experience. That's what we want to nail down before we start looking at any of these other things."

Mills clarified that "multiplayer in R&D" meant the studio was looking at multiplayer not only for Cyberpunk 2077, but "just generally at the studio." However, he was chary about promising anything post-launch.

"Nothing at launch. At launch we're concentrating on the single-player game. That's what we want to give you," Mills emphasized.

Back in March, CD Projekt Red president Adam Kiciński discussed Cyberpunk 2077 during the company's financial results conference for the 2017 financial year. "Technology-wise, Cyberpunk is very advanced. Our technology is ready to interface with future generations," said Kiciński. "The game is developed in such a way that it can use very powerful future equipment, but I can not tell you more beyond that today, as no future generation of consoles have been announced so far."

He added, "As to further extension of the game, I don't like to comment on that, but I won't say that's [it won't have multiplayer] – we said in the past we want our future projects to integrate online components," Kiciński stated. "We're considering anything and everything."

With Cyberpunk 2077's appropriately high level of advanced technology and the way the studio keeps tiptoeing around the word "multiplayer," it seems CD Projekt Red is seriously considering adding multiplayer to the game. Unfortunately, as the studio has been very clear in stating, we'll just have to wait till after launch to see if those plans pan out. Any other details, such as how cross-platform play might work, will have to wait until then.

Cyberpunk 2077's release date has yet to be announced, but stay tuned to Newsweek's Player. One for further news as it emerges.
