Edge Makes Surprise Return at the WWE 'Royal Rumble' Event

The Royal Rumble event, which was most recently held on January 26, has been a place for long-awaited returns, and none was more surprising than that of Edge.

A member of the WWE Hall of Famer and a former world champion, Edge entered the 30-man Royal Rumble match in the No. 21 spot to a thunderous ovation. Watch the moment the fans at Minute Maid Park in Houston discovered Edge was entering the 2020 Royal Rumble below.

Edge's return to competition in the ring is a significant moment, considering he officially retired back in 2011 due to a history of neck issues. WWE

The "Rated-R Superstar," as he is known, would eliminate AJ Styles and Randy Orton, both of whom could be Edge's opponent at this year's WrestleMania in April. Edge would be one of the final three in this year's Royal Rumble match alongside Roman Reigns and eventual winner, Drew McIntyre.

Edge's return to competition in the ring is a significant moment, considering he officially retired back in 2011 due to a history of neck issues. The official diagnosis was cervical spinal stenosis and commentary stated on Sunday that he had three neck fusion surgeries.

The road for Edge's return really kicked off in August 2019 at the SummerSlam pay-per-view event, where he made a surprise appearance on the show to interrupt Elias' performance. Edge has made on-air appearances in WWE since his retirement, mostly in talking roles, but this time he delivered his signature spear to Elias for the first time in 11 years.

PWinsider reported in October that Edge traveled to Pittsburgh where Dr. Joseph Maroon, WWE's medical director, is headquartered and that a return seemed imminent. Edge would go on social media to deny the reports, but PWinsider also reported the WWE transported him to Houston on a private plane early Sunday morning, and he was hidden away until it was time for him to appear in the match.

Following the show, WrestleVotes tweeted that Edge signed a new three-year contract with the WWE for what was described ad "significant money." If the report is true, then fans will likely see much more of Edge in the future.

Perhaps the January 27 episode of Monday Night RAW will shed some light onto what the promotion has planned for Edge.

Following his Royal Rumble appearance, many WWE superstars took to social media to give their reactions to the surprise. Here are a few of our favorites:

Without Edge, there is no me.

He gave me his time when he didn’t have to.

He gave me advice when he didn’t have to.

He gave me a friend when he didn’t have to.

He gave me a place to live when he didn’t have to.

I owe him everything. Tonight made me happy.
