Elderly Man Shot Dead After Being Harassed by Group of Teenagers

An elderly man with a cane was shot and killed by a group of teenagers in Texas on Monday night, local authorities have confirmed.

The shooting occurred around 8:40 p.m. on Fulton and Crosstimbers. Police have opened an investigation, according to May 10 report by Click2Houston.

"They were harassing him. They got to the corner right behind me…They were messing with him. The elderly victim swung his cane at them trying to get him back," said Lt. J.P. Horelica of the Houston Police Department.

"The females were trying to get the two males to leave. All of them start to walk off; one of the males in the group turned around and fired one shot, striking our victim in the chest," Horelica told local station KPRC 2.

The Houston Police Department responded to a report of the shooting and found the elderly victim at the scene. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the man.

Police are searching for nearby surveillance footage to help them with the investigation. At least one witness is cooperating with authorities, said Click2Houston.

The group's four teenage girls were between the ages of 14 and 16, while the two boys were believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, the report said.

Newsweek contacted the Houston Police Department for comment.

A few days earlier, also in Houston, local police opened an investigation into another shooting. A woman allegedly shot dead her boyfriend after he confessed to loving another woman.

Karin Stewart, 51, was arrested on Saturday following reports of a shooting at 23642 Buttress Root Drive, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

Deputies found James Hargrove, 41, with multiple gunshot wounds, and that Stewart told them she had shot him, the sheriff said.

"The male was transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased," Gonzalez tweeted. Stewart was booked into Harris County Jail.

Stewart had been in a relationship with Hargrove for seven years. Their pair had lived together on and off, Houston-based station KHOU reported.

The other woman, a 41-year-old, was reportedly with Hargrove when he died. She is said to have told authorities she believed Hargrove and Stewart had an open relationship.

Stewart appeared before a judge on Monday. H3er bond was set at $75,000.
