E3 2018: EA Announces New 'Command & Conquer' Game 'Rivals' On Mobile

During Electronic Arts' EA Play press conference for E3 2018, EA confirmed that a new Command & Conquer game would be coming to mobile devices titled Command & Conquer: Rivals.

Command & Conquer: Rivals is a simplified 1v1 combat game built for small-scale, on-the-go real-time strategy (RTS) play.

You can check out the official gameplay overview below:

While Command & Conquer: Rivals borrows a lot of aesthetics from mobile blockbusters Clash Royale or Clash of Clans, it clearly takes place in the Command & Conquer universe, featuring GDI, the Brotherhood of Nod and Kane. Rivals features two factions and RTS gameplay that balances unit placement and resource management, with gameplay taking place over the Internet against both friends and strangers.

According to EA, Rivals will feature a tier system for rewards and equippable units similar to Clash Royale, but the details are still in the air. Microtransactions will be available, but EA swears on its pinky that anything you can buy will also be obtainable for free just by playing the game.

Command & Conquer: Rivals is the first Command & Conquer game since 2012, when Tiberium Alliances , a free-to-play browser game, launched. Command & Conquer: Generals 2 was in development as a free-to-play PC game, but feedback after the alpha trial led not only to the game's cancellation, but to the shutdown of Victory Games, the LA-based studio that had put three years into Generals 2's development.

"Your feedback from the alpha trial is clear: We are not making the game you want to play… Although we deeply respect the great work done by our talented team, ultimately it's about getting you the game you expect and deserve," read the statement from Victory Games.

Is Command & Conquer: Rivals the game Command & Conquer fans expect and deserve, then? Either way, EA's certainly poised to scoop up a share of the mind-blowingly lucrative mobile gaming market if Rivals takes off.

Starting on June 9, Android players can pre-register on Google Play to be notified when Command & Conquer: Rivals is available worldwide. By pre-registering, American and Canadian Android players may be invited to the game's pre-alpha. iOS users can pre-register at the game's official website. Official news for the game is available on the game's Twitter @cncrivals.

"As huge fans of the strategy genre, we wanted to build a great RTS on mobile. Rivals embraces the spirit of the Command and Conquer franchise and reimagines gameplay to deliver our vision," said Redwood Studios' Michael Martinez in a press release.

"Rivals is specifically designed for mobile, so we're giving players quick, head-to head live battles with continuous unit control, where skill and strategy reign supreme. The Google Play Pre-Alpha test allows us to put the game in the hands of our players earlier. We can't wait to hear what they think and will use our players' feedback to make Rivals better. We, the development team, are committed to delivering a fun, fair, and competitive experience for all players."
