Elton John Defends Meghan Markle, Prince Harry After They're Accused of Hypocrisy for Taking Private Jet to France

Speaking out in the defense of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's visit to his home in South of France, Elton John slammed the media for its coverage of the couple's trip on Monday.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had made headlines after photos of them taking a private jet to the French Riviera had emerged. Known for their environmental advocacy, the couple was accused of being hypocritical for using a fuel-wasting means of transport.

The Daily Mail had published an article on Sunday stating, "It is estimated Prince Harry and Meghan generated an estimated seven times the emissions per person compared to a commercial flight"

Many like Piers Morgan had tweeted, "Jeez.. these two 'eco-warriors' are something else. Beyond parody"

The royal couple have faced criticism after newspapers claimed they took four private jet journeys in 11 days, including to Elton John's home in Nice.

The singer said he felt the need to protect the royal couple since Harry's mother had been a close friend and given his home to them for privacy. The singer had even performed at their royal wedding reception in May 2018.

Elton John clarified that he had offered his private jet to the couple to bring them to the South of France.

He also added that the jet was carbon neutral, tweeting, "To support Prince Harry's commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™"

Carbon neutrality typically is a term used to describe calculating the amount of greenhouse gas a flight/act must have emitted and financially contributing the same amount to an environmental organization.

The singer requested the media to "cease relentless and untrue assassinations" of the couple.

Known to be a conservationist, Harry said in a July interview with Vogue that the couple would likely only have two children. "We are the one species on this planet that seems to think that this place belongs to us, and only us," he said.

Meanwhile, apart from a few public appearances, Harry and Markle have kept a low profile since the birth of their son, Archie, in May.
