Ember Mug 2 Review: Never Drink Cold Coffee Again

Ember Mug 2 Review
The Ember Mug 2 is the best coffee cup you can buy. Josh Smith

The Ember Mug 2 is the best thing to happen to our morning since we took our first sip of coffee. If you hate cold coffee, then we think you'll love the Ember Mug 2 as much as we do. The battery-powered mug includes a heating element that keeps your coffee or tea at your perfect temperature.

Available in 10-ounce and 14-ounce sizes and an array of colors, the Ember Mug 2 is $99.95 for the 10-ounce model and $129.95 for the 14-ounce size. There are also metallic color options for the 10-ounce size.

We tested the larger Ember Mug 2, which matches the amount of coffee we drink, but both models are very similar in performance.

You can buy the Ember Mug 2 at Amazon, Ember, Apple, Best Buy and in-store at select Starbucks locations.

Is the Ember Mug 2 Worth Buying?

The Ember Mug 2 is worth the price if you love coffee and hate cold coffee. Since we started using Ember, we haven't sipped cold coffee, which directly affects our mood and productivity.

Ember is the perfect mug for anyone that gets lost in their work or takes a long time to finish a cup of coffee. The mug can maintain a consistent temperature between 120 and 145 degrees Fahrenheit. We keep our coffee at 135 degrees, but it is easy to change the temperature using the app.

Battery life is about 80 minutes for the 14-ounce Ember Mug 2, which lasts us through most of our coffee drinking morning. With the charging station at our desk and used as a coaster, the battery easily lasts all day.

Cleaning is as simple as hand washing, and it is safe to fully submerge the mug in the water. After weeks of use, the white mug shows no staining.

Ember Mug 2 Performance and Features

The Ember Mug 2 keeps coffee or tea at your chosen temperature without making the outside of the mug hot. The combination of a cool to the touch mug and perfectly hot coffee is a meaningful morning pleasure, especially as temperatures dip cooler.

It's possible to use the Ember Mug 2 without a smartphone, but connecting it to your phone lets you choose your own perfect temperature and tea drinkers can use a built-in timer to steep tea to the right time.

We like that the mug knows that you've poured a hot beverage in, and automatically starts monitoring. The LED shows that status and will alert you when your coffee or tea is at the perfect temperature. The LED pulses white while you pour coffee in and then glows solid white when it reaches your preferred temperature. If you connect the mug to your phone, a notification there alerts you as well.

The battery life on the 14-ounce mug is rated for 80 minutes, which is a good representation of real-world battery life. At around 65 to 70 minutes of use, the mug lets us know that the battery life is low. If we are drinking more than two cups of coffee, we'll set Ember on the included charging coaster at our desk and unlock all-day battery life.

While you can buy a coffee mug warmer for around $10, Ember keeps your coffee at the same temperature without heating up the cup, and it's perfect for carrying into another room on the weekend as you read a book or taking outside. It's a more elegant solution and worth the price.

On the iPhone, we enabled access to Health Data and can track caffeine intake using the Ember Mug 2. It's an optional feature but an interesting data point. You can only track specific coffee or tea brands, so it's not going to be entirely accurate if you drink a different brand.

Ember Mug 2 Design

The Ember Mug 2 is a ceramic mug with a classic mug style. The company isn't trying to make a high-tech mug here. There is a reason you can buy this mug at Apple and MOMA. Despite the tech inside, the cup doesn't boast about its capabilities with a flashy look.

The size of the 14-ounce mug is perfect. We love that the handle is large enough to fit three fingers when lifting by the handle yet also proportioned for gripping the cup with two fingers slid through the handle. The weight is very similar to a standard coffee mug and the Ember Mug 2 is comfortable to hold onto while you sip a cup on the couch.

Rings on the bottom of the mug connect to the charging coaster's contact points to recharge the mug. It's important to keep the charging coaster and the base of the mug dry. We didn't run into issues with coffee dripping down the side and getting on the charging coil.

Cleaning the mug is easy since it is fully submersible up to a meter. It is hand-wash only, but it is easy to clean, and there are no stains on the white mug despite a lot of use and leaving coffee in it overnight at the end of a few hectic workdays.

The only two drawbacks to the Ember Mug 2 are that you can only hand wash and the plug for the coaster is quite large, so you can't plug two of them into the same outlet on a counter. These are small drawbacks and both ones that aren't dealbreakers.

Which Ember Mug 2 Should You Buy?

Unless you already use and love small coffee mugs, we recommend buying the Ember Mug 2 in the 14-ounce size. This is the perfect amount of coffee for one cup and since it stays warm, you're going to actually finish the full cup.

If you need a travel mug, you should check out the Ember Travel Mug 2, which is a to-go version of this mug.
