Emmitt Smith Named Among NFL's Best Backs in History on Friday, Then Smith's Night Got Better

The NFL Network announced Emmitt Smith as a top running back of all-time during a Friday night program to name members of the NFL's 100th anniversary team. Elated as can be, Smith was just as happy for something happening under the Friday night lights in Texas.

Just a couple of hours after Smith was named one of the 12 running backs of all-time in the National Football League, his son, E.J. Smith, helped pull off one of the biggest playoff upsets in Texas playoff football this season.

E.J. Smith, a four-star running back for Dallas Jesuit, scored four touchdowns, and the deciding touchdown, to help Jesuit knock off defending state champion Longview, 27-25, in the second round of the Class 6A Division II playoffs.

Longview had a lengthy winning streak that reached back well into last season, and the Lobos looked to be one of the teams that could pull off a rather tough feat as repeating as state champions. That is, until the Jesuit Rangers came along.

The elder Smith posted of his new recognition to the all-time NFL 100th anniversary team by saying on Twitter, "So blessed to be honored by the @nfl this evening. From humble beginnings, to milestone achievements, thank you to everyone who supported me throughout my journey!! #NFL100 All-Time Team."

Smith's previous post? Studying film with his son, who has college offers across the country, from his father's alma mater University of Florida along with Georgia, Ohio State, Stanford and Texas A&M.

"Nothing gets you more motivated than watching your competition!," the Hall of Fame Smith tweeted on Friday. "That's why @ejsmith_22 and I sit down down every week to scope out the opponent's game film. Good luck tonight son!!!

Smith rushed for 164 yards Friday night in Dallas and scored the touchdown to give his team a 27-19 lead over Longview. The Lobos scored to bring it within two, and Jesuit held on for the win.

E.J. Smith is rated as the third-best all-purpose back in the country and No. 118 overall recruit in the 2020 recruiting class, according to 247Sports composite. In all, he holds offers from 20 Power Five programs.

The Rangers, one of just two private schools in the state of Texas to play in the public schools league (University Interscholastic League—UIL), knocked off the Longview Lobos, a team expected to repeat as Texas state champion this year.

Another state power, Allen, went down in a 60-59 loss Friday night in Arlington.

E.J. Smith just two weeks ago sat in a hospital with a broken hand, and then last week suited up for Jesuit to help them defeat Lakeview Centennial.

Smith rushed for 2,067 yards over the span of his sophomore and junior seasons at Jesuit, which launched his big-time recruiting campaign.

Now, Jesuit moves on to face Klein Collins, a Houston-area team that upset state-ranked Vandegrift from Austin.
