'The English Game' tells the story of the birth of modern soccer Netflix

Leading the cast of the Netflix show are Edward Holcroft and Kevin Guthrie, best known for their roles in the Kingsman and Fantastic Beasts franchises respectively. Both are playing real-life characters.

Holcroft is playing Arthur Kinnaird, a soccer-playing aristocrat known as the "First Lord of Football," while Guthrie is Fergus Suter, considered the first professional footballer, who unlike the upper class players was paid to play the game.

Also starring in the series are actors Craig Parkinson (Line of Duty), James Harkness (Rogue One) and Gerald Kearns (Shameless U.K.).

Though many versions of the story of the birth of modern soccer focus on the men, in The English Game the stories of the women around them are told for the first time, with characters portrayed by Game of Thrones' Charlotte Hope and Kate Dickie as well as Jamestown's Niamh Walsh.

Walsh said of this to Radio Times: "Because of the historical records, we know much less about the women than we do about the men – but happily, not in this show. The women are very much front and centre, just as much as the fellas."

What will happen in The English Game?

The official Netflix synopsis for The English Game reads: "The six-part drama charts the origins of football and how those involved in its creation reached across the class divide to establish the game as the world's most popular sport."

Creator Julian Fellowes went into more detail about his show in an interview with The Telegraph. He said: "The whole reason the Football Association was formed was so upper class people who'd learnt the game at school could play against one another under a set of agreed rules. But, from the moment the rules were established in the 1860s, the sport increased in popularity seismically, it was extraordinary.

"Every year there were 120, 130, 150 new clubs registering with the FA, and The English Game is the story of how these working class teams finally prised control of the sport from the public school boys."

The English Game is released on Friday, March 20 on Netflix.
