Some stars are constantly in the spotlight — walking red carpets, showing up courtside, or popping up in viral social media posts. Then there's Jack Nicholson.

The 87-year-old acting legend has been keeping a low profile for years, but on Sunday, February 16, he made a rare public appearance at Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary special — much to the delight of fans.

Seated in the audience at Studio 8H, Nicholson introduced Adam Sandler before the comedian performed an original song paying tribute to SNL's legacy.

"Ladies and gentlemen, Adam Sandler," the Anger Management actor said, dressed in a black button-up, black jacket, Yankees beret, and tinted glasses. Next to Nicholson was his 34-year-old daughter, Lorraine Nicholson. (The three-time Oscar winner is also dad to Jennifer Nicholson, 61, Caleb Goddard, 54, Honey Hollman, 44, Ray Nicholson, 32, and Tessa Gourin, 30.)

Naturally, the unexpected sighting sent the internet into overdrive.

"Wow, it's so cool to see him out and about again. Haven't seen him in public for ages. Good for him for showing up at the anniversary special," one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

"Can't believe he's 87 Aging like Fine 🍷 🐐 👏," another added.

"Adam and Jack. It doesn't get much better than that. Only in the good old USA can you see such a thing," chimed in a third.

"I miss seeing Jack Nicholson at the Academy Awards I wish he'd come back," someone else noted.

"Jack Nicholson is immortal," declared another.

"Whoa! Nicholson in the flesh 🙌👀 Glad he is doing well," one fan posted.

Jack's SNL appearance was a rare treat for fans, but it wasn't his first time at the show's anniversary special — he also showed up for SNL40 in 2015.

These days, though, he mostly stays out of the limelight. But that doesn't mean he's disappeared completely. Lakers fans have spotted him courtside with his son Ray, and last month, Lorraine shared a rare selfie of the pair together on Instagram.

As for a comeback? Jack's longtime collaborator James Brooks is still holding out hope.

"I keep on thinking he's going to get itchy and scratch it," the 84-year-old director told People in November 2023. Though the Academy Award winner hasn't acted since How Do You Know in 2010, Brooks added, "My theory is it's not his last movie."
