Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, said in a statement to the Associated Press that Payne "had jumped from the balcony of his room." Police rushed to the hotel in response to an emergency call just after 5 p.m. local time, he said, warning of an "aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol."

Fans of the "For You" singer quickly flocked to various social media platforms to pay their respects to the iconic boy band member.

"WHAT!! he just posted on snapchat less than an hour ago, I just watched his stories omg," said one Instagram user, who was shocked by the news. "Of all the possible news for this Wednesday, Liam Payne's death was definitely not one I was expecting 😢," another noted.

Others questioned the motives behind Payne's fall. "rip 🙏🏽 but sounds strange," said one. "no way he fell on his own..." another concluded. "Foul play?" questioned a third.

The artist gained fame as a member of the renowned pop group, which included Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. In 2015, the band ultimately announced a hiatus, allowing Payne to pursue a solo career. He released his debut album, LP1, in 2019, followed by his latest project, Teardrops, which came out in March.

Payne was also a father, welcoming a son in 2017 with his former partner, Cheryl Cole, who was a member of the pop group Girls Aloud. Neither Cole or his former bandmates have yet to comment on his passing.
