Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was stabbed in his home in Mumbai, India.

The New York Times spoke to police officials in India who explained that Khan, 54, was stabbed multiple times before dawn at his house — situated in the wealthy Bandra neighborhood — on Thursday, January 16.

While the assailant fled the scene, Dixit Gedam, a deputy commissioner with the Mumbai police, told the outlet they believed the stabbing was part of an attempted burglary.

"We know that the intruder used the fire escape to enter the house," Gedam told the publication.

After the attack, Khan was brought to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. Dr. Nitin Dange, the doctor who treated Khan, revealed his arm and neck had wounds and that his spinal cord was badly injured. Khan underwent surgery to remove the knife and aid in spinal fluid that was leaking, per the outlet. Khan is reportedly in stable condition.

Khan, an acclaimed actor, has appeared across various film genres in Bollywood cinema, including romantic comedies like Kal Ho Naa Ho and thrillers like Ek Hasina Thi.

Acting seems to be in Khan's bones as his mother, Sharmila Tagore, is a widely loved actress in India.

As for his personal life, Khan married actress Amrita Singh in 1991. The duo shares two kids together: a daughter, Sara — also an actress — born in 1995, and a son, Ibrahim, born in 2001. The couple divorced in 2004. Khan then married actress Kareena Kapoor in 2012. He and Kapoor share sons Taimur, born in 2016, and Jay, born in 2021.

"It has been an incredibly challenging day for our family, and we are still trying to process the events that have unfolded," she began. "As we navigate this difficult time, I respectfully and humbly request that the media and paparazzi refrain from the relentless speculation and coverage."

Kapoor continued: "While we appreciate your concern and support, the constant scrutiny and attention are not only overwhelming but also pose a significant risk to our safety. I kindly request that you respect our boundaries and give us the space we need to heal and cope as a family."
