Nicolas Cage took home the award for Best Actor in a Film for his role as Paul Matthews in Dream Scenario, the latest film from Kristoffer Borgli, which follows an ordinary man whose life gets turned upside down when he becomes a recurring character in strangers' dreams.
Instead of using the opportunity to do the usual thanks and short show of gratitude, Cage took the chance to speak out against the use of AI, beginning his speech by saying, "There is another world that is also disturbing me. It's happening right now around all of us. The new AI world."
Cage went on to say, "I am a big believer in not letting robots dream for us. Robots cannot reflect the human condition for us."

"That is a dead end," the Academy Award-winning actor continued. "If an actor lets one AI robot manipulate his or her performance even a little bit, an inch will eventually become a mile, and all integrity, purity and truth of art will be replaced by financial interests only. As human artists – not robots pretending to be artists – we can't let that happen."
AI was a large component behind the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023, with actors and writers growing increasingly concerned about the rate at which AI is becoming a part of Hollywood and the effect it might have on their futures in the industry.
A large portion of the debate around the use of AI in films is about how it removes the human aspect of making movies.
"The job of all art, in my view, film performance included, is to hold a mirror to the external and internal stories of the human condition through the very human thoughtful and emotional process of recreation," Cage said in his speech. "A robot can't do that. If we let robots do that, it will lack all heart, and eventually lose edge and turn to mush. There will be no human response to life as we know it. It will be life as robots tell us to know it."

Cage rounded out his thoughts with a plea to his fellow film actors: "Protect yourselves from AI interfering with your authentic and honest expressions."
Nicolas Cage is currently attached to six projects, including Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and Spider-Noir. He is also expected to star as John Madden in David O. Russell's Madden, a film about the legendary NFL head coach and his venture into creating the bestselling football video game.
