“Knives Out 4” is no longer a myth.

The fourth film in director Rian Johnson’s series of murder mysteries just got confirmed by the man himself, who said he’s already begun thinking about it. That’s despite the previous film, “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” having only just released on November 26th, 2025

"I have some basic, elemental, conceptual ideas," the filmmaker tells Entertainment Weekly. "Like, 'OK, it'd be interesting if it were this kind of thing' kernels."

Johnson publicly revealing he’s started to map out the core concept of “Knives Out 4” speaks to his confidence in the project, which seems to be in the earliest stages of pre-production.

However, the director, who also helmed “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” in 2017, is quick to rein in expectations of a speedy turnaround.

"I don't have actual concrete ideas," he adds. "I don't have a theme yet, I don't have a location. It's really pretty vague, and I feel like it's good to kinda keep it vague until I'm ready to actually sit down and write it."

Still, it’s refreshing to know Netflix appears to want more “Knives Out” movies, even after its multi-million-dollar acquisition deal has been completed.

On March 31st, 2021, Netflix reportedly bought the rights to two Knives Out sequels for over $400 million. These were “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” which released November 23rd, 2022, and “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” which released on November 26th, 2025.

‘Knives Out 4’ Release Date

There is no release date yet for “Knives Out 4.” A long wait is expected, however, given that Johnson has now helmed three of them in a row and wants a break.

There has typically been a three-year wait between “Knives Out” sequels, but with Johnson stating he’s going to direct another film in between, it could signal a 2031 release for “Knives Out 4.”

Rian Johnson's Next Film

Rian Johnson’s next film is an untitled thriller with sci-fi elements, the director confirms. Speaking with Empire, Johnson says, “The most exciting thing right now is this idea I have in my head for the next thing I'm gonna make, and I think ultimately, that's all you can do, is just kind of follow your nose.”

“If I had to define it genre-wise, I'd say it harkens back to the '70s paranoid thrillers. It's got a light sci-fi element to it.”
