Nosferatu has passed the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office, doubling its reported production budget of $50 million

Director Robert Eggers' remake of the classic 1922 vampire horror movie earned $69.4 million domestically and $30.9 million overseas, making it the highest-grossing film of his career.

Nosferatu released on Christmas day in the US and 1 January in the UK. It's already $30 million north of Eggers' last film, 2022's The Northman, and has grossed four times the amount of 2019's The Lighthouse. Nosferatu reviews are mostly positive, with the film currently sitting at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 218 reviews. "There's a terrible beauty to it all and a seductive quality that makes Eggers's febrile gothic nightmare a hard thing to shake," writes The Guardian.

There's a reason the scares appear particularly real: it's because some of them are. Nicholas Hoult, who plays Thomas Hutter in the film, attested the rats used were not CGI. "No, they're real," he told the UK's Capital Evening Show.

"Yeah, they had them crawling all over them and stuff," and because the rats were not house trained, their smell was "quite rich."

A reported five thousand actual rats were used during filming. Lily Rose-Depp, who plays Hoult's wife Ellen, added, "I mean to be honest they aren't my personal fave, but I love them from afar...My character didn't have to really reckon with any rats, Bill and Emma had to deal with more rats sort of close to the body."

"I was in that scene with Emma where they had all the rats you know crawling all over their body and I remembered thinking I do not envy you now."

Nosferatu digital release

There's still time for Nosferatu to earn more during its theatrical run, making it an even bigger box office milestone. After that, it's expected to start streaming on Peacock in mid-February 2025. Previous Focus Features have followed a similar timeline of releasing on video-on-demand roughly a month and a half after leaving cinemas.
