Ronald D. Moore is one of the producers who brought fans "Star Trek" and "Battlestar Galactica." More recently, he was named showrunner of Amazon's upcoming adaptation of "God of War." And he has just admitted to what many fans will consider the worst sin he could possibly commit: he hasn't played the games and, from the sound of it, he isn't going to play them any time soon.

Moore was talking to his old "Battlestar Galactica" collaborator Katee Sackhoff on "The Sackhoff Show" podcast when Sackhoff brought up how intimidating it must be to adapt a franchise as well-loved as "God of War." Moore responded, "Yeah, and I'm not a gamer, so it's even more like, 'Okay, I've never done this before.'"

This action-adventure video game sequel follows Kratos and Atreus as they brace themselves for the impending arrival of Ragnarök.

To be fair, Moore did say he tried to play the games, but that he was tripped up by the controllers. "I've tried," Moore said. "I'm not a gamer. I took a stab at it. I grew up in the arcade era. I can do that. I can play 'Defender,' or 'Asteroid,' sure. But, the controllers now... I can't quite get over that."

As you can imagine, the response from "God of War" fans on social media hasn't been forgiving.

Of course, as a number of X users mention in the comments, Moore doesn't necessarily need to play the games in order to experience the story. There are complete playthroughs for both 2018's "God of War" and the 2022 follow-up "God of War: Ragnarök" available on YouTube. He also says his wife and children aren't as confused by modern controllers, so he could always watch one of them play the games.

The first "God of War" game was released in 2005 for the Sony Playstation 2, which sees the hero Kratos ultimately kill Ares, the Greek god of war, and replace him in the pantheon of Olympus. Six more games were released set in this era, with the last being 2013's "God of War: Ascension."

More recently a new "God of War" was released in 2018 in which Kratos must contend with the gods of Norse mythology while protecting and training his son, Atreus. It is widely believed these are the games upon which the Amazon series will be based. On one hand "God of War" and "God of War: Ragnarök" are exciting action/adventure games with stunning visuals. On the other, the games tell a powerful, often heartbreaking story about a man raising his son.
