In the world of Jeopardy!, pronunciation is everything.
While it's always been a hot topic among fans, a recent ruling surrounding new champion Eamonn Campbell has once again sparked debate amongst viewers. During the Friday, October 11 episode, Campbell faced a challenging moment when he was unable to articulate the correct answer to a clue.
In that episode, five-day champion Mark Fitzpatrick selected the $800 clue from the category "Just Doin' My Job," which read: "Knows the proper use of propofol; can count to 16 (letters in the job); can tell people to count backward from 100." The correct answer was "anesthesiologist." Campbell, a lawyer from Vermont, buzzed in confidently but stumbled over the pronunciation, saying "anateesiologist?" with a noticeable emphasis on the "tee" sound.

Host Ken Jennings gave Campbell a second chance, prompting him to repeat his answer. This time, Campbell attempted, "Anathesiologist?" again mispronouncing the term. Consequently, Campbell was deemed incorrect. Meanwhile, third contestant Dot White managed to buzz in with a slightly more accurate response, saying, "What is an Anesthesiologist?" which Jennings ruled correct.
Fans instantly took to social media to express their frustration with the nature of the judges' decisions regarding pronunciation. "Jeopardy and ken Jennings blows it again ... screwing Eamonn out of his answer "anesthesiologist" ....unbelievable!!," said one fan on X (formerly Twitter). Another said, "Oh man, guy on Jeopardy who got caught out having no idea how to pronounce "anesthesiologist" just lived through one of my biggest nightmares. They even made him repeat it!"
Despite the heated discussions around pronunciation, the night ultimately belonged to Campbell, who defeated Fitzpatrick, who ended the game with $4,800 while Campbell racked up $12,200, solidifying his place as the new champion.
Jeopardy! fans were left frustrated last week when all three of the contestants swung and missed on what many considered an "easy" "Final Jeopardy" clue. Fitzpatrick, along with contestants Amanda Prusila and Daniel Gately, all entered the "Final Jeopardy" round where the category "Brand Names" was announced. Host Ken Jennings presented the clue: "In 1886 this brand's bookkeeper came up with its name & flowing script logo, saying, 'The two Cs would look well in advertising.'" While viewers at home thought the answer would have been more obvious, both Prusila and Fitzpatrick wrote "Coco Chanel," and Gately submitted "Currier." The correct response was Coca-Cola.
