Claptrap's original voice actor, David Eddings, has tweeted that he will not be returning to the role for Borderlands 3. The actor, who's portrayed the spunky robot in every other game in the series, was asked by a fan if he would be returning for the third installment. "For the first time, I insisted on getting paid for my performance and all of a sudden they couldn't afford me," Eddings tweeted. "Maybe next time they should put the $12M payment from 2K in the Gearbox bank account instead."

It's unclear what happened behind the scenes between Eddings and Gearbox studios, though it is unfortunate that he will not be returning. Claptrap is one of the best parts of Borderlands. He adds a sense of humor on top of nihilistic dread and fans love him. So much so he is the defacto mascot for the game and easily it's most identifiable character. Playing through the first few levels of Borderlands 2 is so much more enjoyable because of Claptrap's endless stream of hilarious dialogue.

Eddings worked at Gearbox while Borderlands was in production as the VP of business development. In June of 2017, he joined Rooster Teeth Games, which has been working on the console port of Bendy and the Ink Machine. In the viral horror game, Eddings plays the eccentric Joey Drew, owner of the haunted studio players must explore. His main job isn't voice acting, but he's lent his vocal talents to projects he enjoys working on. Eddings will continue his work as Joey Drew and will continue doing "VO work for fun on games me and my friends make," according to a tweet.

Currently, the only returning voice actor for Borderlands 3 is Troy Baker as Rhys. It's unclear who's voice we will hear when the game finally launches on Xbox, PS4 and PC on September 13.
