New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday he will endorse former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the city's mayoral race.

Why It Matters

Adams, a Democrat, ended his reelection campaign last month after it became clear he had no path to victory in November. He had criticized Cuomo, a Democrat running as a third-party candidate, for pressuring him to drop out, calling him “a snake and a liar.” Adams also previously criticized Cuomo's record as governor, including his efforts to reform bail laws.

The New York Times called Adams' decision a "stunning reversal" as Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani has the momentum in the race.

Cuomo saw a 10-point rise in a recent poll after Adams dropped out, suggesting that Cuomo has already won over most Adams supporters, the outlet reported. Mamdani still leads Cuomo by double digits in recent polls.

Adams told The Times on Thursday that he plans to campaign with Cuomo in neighborhoods where he remains popular and encourage voters to support the former governor. Frank Carone, a top adviser to Adams, and Randy Mastro, the first deputy mayor, also endorsed Cuomo.

“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have suffered from gentrification on how important this race is,” Adams said.

Adams and Cuomo were friends and political allies prior to the race, according to The New York Times. The two were seated together at last night's New York Knicks NBA season opener at Madison Square Garden after the final mayoral debate in Queens.

What People Are Saying

New York City Mayor Eric Adams told The New York Times: "They have watched their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

What To Know

The mayoral election is scheduled for November 4, 2025. Early voting starts on October 25.
