Houston Astros fans will never forget Chas McCormick's impact on the 2022 World Series, even if his tenure with the organization finished with a rather pedestrian couple of seasons.

McCormick, once firmly established as a starting outfielder in Houston, played in only 66 games for the Astros this past season, and wound up being optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land during the club's September playoff push. Then, at the end of the regular season, he was outrighted off the 40-man roster, leading him to elect free agency.

McCormick will be looking for a breakout performance in spring training this year to prove he still belongs in a major league lineup, and on Thursday, we learned that he would be doing so for a National League club with designs on competing for a World Series of its own.

According to a Thursday report from Chandler Rome of The Athletic, the Chicago Cubs are planning to sign McCormick to a minor-league deal that includes an invite to spring training.

McCormick, who turns 31 in April, had real momentum a couple of years ago. He parlayed his memorable catch in Game 5 of the World Series in 2022 into a 3.4-bWAR season in 2023, seemingly locking down a starting role in the outfield for the next few years.

However, McCormick started missing significant time due to injury in 2024, as he hurt his hamstring and fractured his hand at separate points during the year. He suffered an oblique strain this past May, and when he was on the field, he compiled negative-1.6 bWAR across the last two seasons.

If McCormick is 100% healthy at the start of spring training, perhaps he can shake his struggles from the last two seasons and perform well enough to earn a shot for a loaded Cubs roster that could admittedly use one more right-handed platoon bat in the outfield.
