All 'The Expanse' Characters Who Have Died From Season 1 to 5

Over the course of five seasons, The Expanse has seen many a major character die.

Sadly for fans, the hit Amazon Prime Video series will shortly be coming to an end with its sixth season, which will stream weekly on the platform from Friday, December 10.

The sci-fi hit has seen a number of characters meet their end, including some who are still alive in the book franchise of the same name by James S. A. Corey.

Ahead of the show's final season, Newsweek will look back which characters have died so far, from Season 1 to Season 5.

Who died in The Expanse Season 1?

No major characters died in the first season of The Expanse.

Who died in The Expanse Season 2?

Josephus Miller

Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane) was a Belter who worked as a detective from Ceres, and he becomes involved with Julie Mao (Florence Faivre) after being assigned to a case about her disappearance.

The character dies when Julie's conscience, now part of the protomolecule in asteroid Eros, is sent hurtling towards Earth, the impact of which will kill everyone on the planet.

Josephus saves Earth by speaking to Julie's consciousness in the protomolecule-hybrid and convincing her to send Eros to Venus instead, where he is based.

The impact of the asteroid kills both Josephus and Julie.

Julie Mao

While she was technically part of Eros' protomolecule-hybrid, Julie's physical self died when she was first infected with the protomolecule.

Solomon Epstein

Solomon Epstein (Sam Huntington) was a Martian responsible for the development of the Epstein Drive, which gave humans the chance to travel beyond Earth and colonize the asteroid belt and outer planets.

Epstein is alive 137 years prior to the time period Season 2 is set in, and he dies after prolonged exposure to G-forces when his ship is accelerating through space.

Who died in The Expanse Season 3?

Diogo Harari

Diogo Harari (Andrew Rotilio) was a Belter from Tycho Station who was a Lieutenant in the OPA Navy, and he plays a much larger role in the TV show than in the books.

The character is killed when Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper) drops an elevator on him before he can kill Camina Drummer (Cara Gee).

Cotyar Ghazi

Cotyar Ghazi (Nick E. Tarabay) was a member of the intelligence division of the UN's military, and he also worked as a bodyguard for Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo).

He died after infecting himself with the protomolecule and blowing up the reactor of the spaceship the UNN Agatha King

Who died in The Expanse Season 4?

Klaes Ashford

Klaes Ashford (David Strathairn) is a Belter who is the First Officer of the OPAS Behemoth, and he was second-in-command to Captain Drummer.

Ashford was killed by Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander) after the villain's son Filip (Jasai Chase Owens) stopped his attack on their ship, Inaros did so by ejecting Ashford into space.

Who died in The Expanse Season 5?

Fred Johnson

Fred Johnson (Chad L. Coleman) was killed in Season 5 episode "Gaugamela" by Sakai (Bahia Watson), who betrayed him unexpectedly to steal the Belt's protomolecule sample that he kept.

Despite being left for dead, the character actually survives the betrayal in the books and joins James Holden (Steven Strait) aboard the Rocinante until his death in book 6, "Babylon's Ashes", which is the novel Season 6 is based on.

Alex Kamal

Alex Kamal (Cas Anvar) was a pilot for the Rocinante who died in the Season 5 finale, titled "Nemesis Game."

The character died of a stroke while trying to save Naomi from the Chetzemoka.

His death came as a shock to viewers as the character is still alive in the books, but he was killed off in the show following allegations made against actor Anvar.

In June 2020 several women came forward accusing Anvar of sending them inappropriate messages, and sexually harassing and assaulting them.

The company who make The Expanse, Alcon Entertainment, launched an independent investigation to verify the claims, and when Season 6 was renewed it was confirmed the actor would not return.

Episodes of The Expanse Season 6 will air weekly on Prime Video from Friday, December 10.
