Transfer News: Latest Manchester United Rumors Link Jose Mourinho With Monaco Midfielder

Jose Mourinho may have been frustrated up until now with Manchester United's transfer business this summer, with the club managing to briong in just one player in Benfica's Victor Lindelof.

The wheels may be moving now, though.

Corriere dello Sport in Italy reports Paris Saint-Germain's attempt to sign A.S. Monaco midfielder Fabinho has fallen through, with the French champion "unwilling" to sell one of its best players to a direct competitor.

Manchester United is also interested in acquiring the Brazilian although P.S.G. had moved ahead of it in the short queue in recent days. But the Italian newspaper claims P.S.G. is now completely out of the running for Fabinho, leaving Mourinho and United to make another attempt at signing him. Fabinho's "likely future" is now said to be in the Premier League.

It seems unlikely that United will sanction two huge deals for defensive midfielders this summer, with Chelsea's Nemanja Matic incoming. Then again, Mourinho may feel that a midfield that was sluggish last season requires a complete overhaul. If a player of Fabinho's caliber becomes available—he can play right back, too—it may be worth going out and getting him anyway, even in a position that's no longer of need.

It's only going to get more difficult to pursue Monaco midfielders as the summer goes on, and more of them leave. Bernardo Silva has already long since departed for Manchester City, while Tiemoue Bakayoko will almost certainly leave for Chelsea.

Mourinho ruled himself out of a deal for Fabinho in June, according to the Manchester Evening News, though that may have been some kidology. Even a club of United's size and spending power cannot really afford to be drawn into a bidding war with a club as rich as P.S.G.

It seems there is still a good chance that one of European football's most coveted midfielders could yet turn up at Old Trafford this summer.
