'Fallout 76' Free Range Guide - Real Sheepsquatch Event Walkthrough & Rewards

Fallout 76 players recently discovered a new event called Free Range, which brings the Sheepsquatch legend to life. In this guide, we'll outline ways to trigger the event, how to finish the encounter and recap the rewards you get for completing it.

How to start the Free Range event in Fallout 76

Like most live events in Fallout 76, those who really want to find it are best off server hopping. For the purposes of this guide, we're working from the medium-difficulty Sheepsquatch encounter at Big Fred's BBQ Shack, because that seems to be the most common spawn spot. Players have also found Free Range in the following locations.

  • Groves Family Cabin (an easy encounter with one Sheepsquatch at level 50)
  • Southern Belle Motel (a hard encounter with two level 80 Sheepsquatch)
  • Valley Galleria

Pick one of these spots and server hop till you find the NPC listed below. Note that this Sheepsquatch encounter is best attempted by a skilled group. Many high-level players have struggled to emerge victorious in this fight, so don't be the fool who attempts it solo.

How to complete the Free Range event in Fallout 76

You'll know you're eligible for the Free Range event when you see a bunch of Brahmin cows and a dead NPC called Beckwith Farmhand. Take all of its supplies, including the Beckwith Farmhand Directive, Shepherd's Crook and Steel Scrap.

Now, equip the Shepherd's Crook and start spamming it on the back of the Brahmin to direct them towards Beckwith Farm. Those who don't know where that is can use the map below.

Along the tedious journey, you'll encounter plenty of wolves and bugs, but they shouldn't cause much of a problem for mid-level characters. Your main focus should be watching the Brahmin closely, because they can get very off track if you don't.

You'll know you're getting close to your destination when the Brahmin turn onto the dirt road towards Beckwith. The enemies are likely to get more difficult at this point too, so don't be surprised if you start seeing some Glowing Yao Guai as you approach the farm. Just hit these threats with as much firepower as you can muster, while also saving up for the inevitable Sheepsquatch.

Eventually you'll see at least one Noxious Legendary Sheepsquatch. Like most boss encounters in Fallout 76, the main objective of this one is to do as much damage as you possibly can very quickly. That means lots of explosives and a Power Fist can work really well here. If you don't have those, just switch to the highest DPS stuff in your inventory.

Once you start doing damage, the Sheepsquatch will eventually turn red. This means its entered rage mode, and can regain health and deal increased damage. Just power through that phase, and eventually a second Sheepsquatch will arrive alongside a bunch of Mirelurks.

The secondary goal of the Free Range event is to maintain health for at least one of your Brahmin while the battle rages on. Generally the cows run off once the bosses arrive, but they're still susceptible to damage from annoyances like Bloatflies and Stingwings. With that in mind, have at least one member of your party on partial Brahmin duty to ensure the cattle survives.

As long as you keep doing damage, the Sheepsquatch will eventually go down. If not, start back at square one and try again. Since this is a largely PvE event that can occur in several different locations, there aren't too many concrete strategies for victory.

Free Range Event Rewards

Once you take down the Sheepsquatch, here's a list of the rewards you get.
