A family living in Istanbul was left devastated when their cat jumped from the balcony and went missing, but a call three weeks later changed everything.

Owner Ahmet told Newsweek via Reddit that the first day of losing the family cat was the worst. It started as an ordinary day with the cat, Kereviz, wandering around the house. He then heard a cat scream, followed by a loud sound from the street. The family ran out to investigate. Ahmet believed the cat hid in a car after falling, and the vehicle drove off without realizing.

"We kept looking around the nearby streets, putting flyers, etc.," he said. "That lasted one full week of sleeping, looking for the cat, sleeping. After the first week, we lost hope of finding the cat by searching."

Giving up, the family believed that if Kereviz were to come back, she would return on her own, or they would receive a call from a local animal shelter after scanning her microchip. Instead, someone saw the family's cat roaming the streets about 55 miles away. He noted the cat appeared healthy, but scared, and decided to scan her picture on the internet, leading him to discover Ahmet's online posts.

Ahmet received the call from the man about three weeks after Kereviz went missing.

"My brother and I were out to the cinema to suppress our daily anxiety about the cat," he said. "We saw the messages and directly traveled to the location. Thankfully, the location was still within city boundaries, and we got there just in time."

Kereviz purred when the family arrived, before getting in her carrier to travel back home. She appeared thinner after the three weeks, but she's already getting back to her form.

"No health issues for now," he said. "She got just a couple of scratches on her paws, and that's it. I have no idea how she stayed alive there for three weeks without getting any wounds, but well, not going to ask many questions."

Stunned by the turn of events, Ahmet shared the story of finding the family cat on the subreddit channel r/cats, which has since received over 10,000 upvotes and 174 comments.

"Congrats on getting your cat back! I can't imagine how much you've worried for her!" wrote a Reddit user.

Another said: "Oh my lord, I would have lost my mind. So glad she’s hooooome!!!!"

A third person joked: "That cat definitely racked up some serious frequent flyer miles."
