'F9': The Connection Between Cardi B's Character and Han That You Probably Missed

Fast and Furious has a habit of bringing old characters back to life, such as Letty Ortiz (played by Michelle Rodriguez). But the franchise also has story strands even mega-fans can miss as each movie lays clues to how characters are woven into the saga.

In the case of Fast and Furious 9, Cardi B's character has origins many would have missed, and links to a character whose resurrection seemed unlikely before trailers suggested otherwise.

There are spoilers for Fast and Furious 9 ahead.

The Connection Between Cardi B's Character and Han

For those who have missed the posters and trailer, Han (Sung Kang) is back in the family after supposedly dying in The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift.

His death even sparked the events of Furious 7, as his supposed killer Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) became the main antagonist.

But in the new movie, F9, he returns after Letty and Mia (Jordana Brewster) track him down to Tokyo, where he has been living since the third film.

He explains he went to Tokyo after his girlfriend, Gisele (Gal Gadot) told him it was to be their home, but her death meant they could never live there together.

Instead, Han went alone and the events of Tokyo Drift took place.

He sent Dom (Vin Diesel) a postcard with an image of Mexico on it, meaning Letty and Mia could track him down by following the Mexican flag outside his window.

While Han's death took place between Fast and Furious 6 and Furious 7, his connection to Leysa, Cardi B's character took place even further in the franchise's past.

Before he met Gisele, Han was in a relationship with Cara Mirtha (Mirtha Michelle), whom he met in the Dominican Republic.

In the events of Los Bandoleros, a short film that takes place between the first and fourth Fast and Furious movies, Dom and Han meet in the Dominican Republic, and they begin working together.

Han meets Dom's friend Cara, and the two quickly strike up a friendship, which turns into something more.

In Fast and Furious, the fourth film, the pair hijack a fuel tanker with Dom, Letty and two of Dom's old prison inmates.

Han and Cara do not appear in much of the rest of the movie, but Han does return in subsequent movies without Cara, eventually starting a relationship with Gisele.

It is through Cara that Han and Leysa are connected, as Leysa is Cara's little sister.

Leysa is hired by Queenie Shaw (Helen Mirren) to help Dom escape from Interpol, who have been called in to imprison him.

Leysa and her crew dress as Interpol agents and collect Dom from his predicament, setting him free to continue in his mission.

As they chat, Leysa and Dom clearly know each other, and she tells him how she left the Dominican Republic, and thanks him for helping her get a job with Queenie.

Director Justin Lin also confirmed to Entertainment Tonight how her character has been "around for a long time," showing how she is far more than a new face within the franchise.
