Fat Dog's Reaction to Being Served Salad Goes Viral: 'The Look of Betrayal'

An overweight dog's clear disappointment at his new diet-friendly dinner has left the internet in stitches this week after gaining viral attention on TikTok.

The Corgi and German Shepherd cross with thousands of followers on the video-sharing app is called Flaco—which ironically means "thin" in Spanish.

On June 21, a video of the pup was shared by TikTok user wtflaco, sharing the moment the dog was given a green bean salad for lunch. With more than 1.7 million views it has delighted viewers.

The caption read: "The look of betrayal," while the text overlay said: "When lunch is a green bean salad because the vet called you fat."

The footage shows Flaco's unimpressed reaction as he looks to his healthy salad and then up at the camera to express his disappointment.

"You hurt his feelings," joked one commenter. While another said: "How can you resist that face."

"Omg that face," wrote one viewer.

"Apologize and give him his real food back," joked another TikTok user.

VCA Animal Hospitals reports that obesity is the most common preventable disease in dogs in North America, with around 25-30 percent of the general canine population being obese.

Obesity can shorten a dog's life and makes it more likely to develop diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and joint issues, among other things.

If you suspect your dog may be overweight, it is always a good idea to consult your vet for advice on adjusting their diet for healthy weight loss. "It is not appropriate to simply reduce the volume of their current food. This will cause malnourishment over time," explained VCA Animal Hospitals: "It is appropriate and important to feed a nutritional product that has lower overall calorie density, yet maintains an appropriate nutrient balance."

"He looks so sad," wrote one viewer.

"Aww his sad eyes," said another commenter on the TikTok video: "Give him a treat or something else to eat."

"My dog loves green beans," wrote another viewer. In fact, this week another dog's love of green beans delighted the internet after gaining viral attention. "I can't stop giggling," joked one person after seeing the green bean-loving pup: "The face. The sound."

"I understand his pain," joked another TikTok user.

Another viewer said: "Give him a treat," and Flaco's owner obliged, offering the pup a healthy treat in another video where she gave him a hard-boiled egg.

Pet MD agrees that a hard-boiled egg is good for dogs, providing an excellent source of fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and protein.

Other viewers suggested different foods to try on the dog's new diet, one comment said: "Have you tried broccoli or canned carrots? My little guy loves those and is on a strict diet due to diabetes."

Newsweek has reached out to wtflaco for comment.
