Father Accidentally Shot Dead His Own Daughter on Hunting Trip

An 11-year-old girl was accidentally shot dead by her father at a hunting lease in Texas, according to reports.

Police from the Harrison County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) were alerted to a hunting accident involving an 11-year-old girl near Young and Hickey Road, in Hallsville, at about 5:05 p.m. on November 27, KMHT Radio reported.

In additional calls, it was established the father had accidentally shot his daughter with a high-powered rifle.

When HCSO deputies and emergency medical service teams arrived, they found the young girl had suffered life-threatening gunshot injuries.

While an emergency care flight was requested, all helicopters in the region were grounded due to poor weather conditions, according to the station.

The girl was later transported by a medical crew to Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, who administered lifesaving care, the young girl was pronounced dead.

HCSO investigators and a crime scene investigator responded with members from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and will carry out a further investigation into the shooting, according to KMHT Radio.

The name of the victim will not be released until all family members are notified about her death, police said.

Sheriff Brandon Fletcher told the radio station: "Anytime a young person loses their life, it's tragic for all involved. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends during this difficult time."

Newsweek has contacted Sheriff Fletcher for comment.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, a database that collects information about shootings across the U.S., it is the 38th incident where at least one child aged 0-11 was accidentally shot dead or was injured in Texas this year.

Last year, an Ohio father shot his own son dead in a deer-hunting accident, according to authorities.

Bradley Smith, then 63, and 28-year-old Andrew Smith had been hunting with a group of friends in Ohio's Delaware County when the accident happened on December 2.

The father had apparently fatally shot his son, mistaking him for a deer at dusk, Delaware County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Tracy Whited told The Columbus Dispatch.

No charges were filed against Smith, Whited later confirmed to the newspaper and added: "It's just the worst kind of tragedy. He thought he was shooting at a deer and it was his son."

WBNS reported that Smith, of Columbus, had been hunting with his son since he was 7 years old.
