File Your Taxes to Collect Missed Child Tax Credits, White House Says

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is urging families to take full advantage of the tax credits available to them.

In a speech on February 8, Harris said that families can collect missing child tax credits if they properly file their taxes this season. She made the remarks during a joint address with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who also encouraged citizens to file their taxes as soon as possible.

The Treasury secretary explained that many families have only received half of their available tax credits. These child tax credits were sent to families across the country in July 2021 and were designated to over 61 million families between then and December 2021, Reuters reported. However, these credits were dispersed in halves. If families want to receive the second half of this money, then they will have to file their taxes. This policy has caused many families that might be in need to not yet have received their additional credit.

"In many cases, we're talking about families who are still entitled to $3,000 to $3,600, depending on the age of their child," explained Yellen.

When discussing the importance of this money to families across the country, Harris talked about a letter she received from a Pennsylvania couple with four children. The letter discussed how the couple "just [needed] a little help" with making ends meet as the husband and wife work 50-hour workweeks.

"I receive letters like this all the time," Harris said. "The truth is, there are people across our nation who work hard every day and still struggle to get by. And it should not be this way in our country—in the United States of America."

The vice president explained that she and President Joe Biden wanted to "give families and working people a little help" by expanding the child tax credit, adding that the effects of this expansion are already starting to bring major change.

"Thanks to the Child Tax Credit, we are on a path to cut child poverty in America by 40 percent. That bears repeating," said Harris. "We are on a path to cut child poverty by 40 percent. This is historic and, as I said earlier, will have a generational impact. Millions of families have used their monthly Child Tax Credit check to put food on the table, to save for college, to cover daily expenses and to pay down debt."

Both Harris and Yellen encouraged people to go to for more information regarding the filing process.

"If you are eligible for the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit, we want you to get those credits," Harris said, "and you know why. Working families deserve a break."
