Spring Valley Nursing Home Fire Video Shows Building Collapse in Blaze

A resident has died and two firefighters were injured after a massive fire ripped through an assisted living facility in upstate New York, causing the building to partially collapse.

Firefighters responded to the Evergreen Court Home for Adults on Lafayette Street in Spring Valley after the blaze broke out in the early hours of Tuesday morning. It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze.

One resident was killed in the fire, Rockland County Fire coordinator Chris Kear said, according to The Associated Press. "This was a devastating loss," Kear said.

Two firefighters were transported to hospitals for treatment after being injured in the fire, Kear said.

Spring Valley - 65 Lafayette Street (Evergreen Home for Adults) - reported odor of something burning upgraded by PD on scene to a smoke condition inside...

Eyewitness Mark Kennedy told Newsweek that he was passing by the area at around 1.30 a.m. when he saw the raging fire. The blaze "blasted" the building and it caved in, he said.

Videos from the scene showed the second floor of the facility collapsing as the blaze burned.

Kennedy said there was a large first responder presence on the scene and authorities have been working to evacuate people from inside the facility. "It's a nursing home so the chances that someone was trapped there is very high," he added.

New York State Police Trooper Steven Nevel, a public information officer for Troop F Headquarters, told the AP that the facility's residents were taken by bus to another facility.

Nevel said authorities were working to determine whether anyone was missing in the building.

Rockland County Legislator Laurie Santulli wrote on Facebook that her "heart and prayers go out to all those affected by this tragic fire in Spring Valley overnight at the Evergreen Court Nursing Home."
