4 Houston Police Officers Shot Monday, 2 Shooting Suspects Dead

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said four undercover narcotics officers were shot Monday while serving a warrant in an active drug scene in the Southeast part of town.

Two shooting suspects are now dead from the scene in what's typically a docile Gloverdale neighborhood. The names of the suspects haven't been released.

Acevedo said the officers had a warrant for the hous, and that they announced themselves while breaching the door and entering the house, only to encounter gunfire.

"Immediately upon breaching the door, the officers came under fire from one or two suspects inside the house," Acevedo said. Acevedo said one suspect retreated, then reappeared with more gunfire.

Three officers were taken to the hospital by ambulance and another was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital — a Level I trauma center in hospital.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said it was a tough day for the city — which says a lot from a metro area that faced Hurricane Harvey head-on just a year and a half ago.

"This has been a tough day for our city," Turner said. "Pray for their families, pray for their spouses, their children, their parents, all of their loved ones."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he woud deploy state resources "to bring swift justice to those involved," and that he and his wife, Cecilia, were praying for the officers involved in this statement from Austin.

"This evening's horrific attack on police officers is a solemn reminder of the service and sacrifice our brave men and women in law enforcement make every day to keep us safe," Gov. Abbott said. "The city of Houston and the Houston Police Department will have whatever state resources they need to bring swift justice to those involved. I ask all Texans to join Cecilia and me in praying for the officers injured, and for the continued safety of all law enforcement officers who protect our communities."

The police chief asked for prayers in his tweet: "We have had several officers shot please pray for officers on the way to the scene now more information to follow."
