'Flashpoint' Movie Recruits 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Writers to Direct

Flashpoint is one of the many DC Comics adaptations that haven't escaped production delays and rewrites. But today's news is a glimmer of hope the film will find a hard release date on the Warner Bros. production schedule. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are confirmed to direct the film. The pair were screenwriters for Marvel's summer hit Spider-Man: Homecoming, whose titular character isn't all that different from the Justice League's youngest recruit, Barry Allen.

Seth Grahame-Smith, writer of LEGO Batman, was the original director of the film. He stepped down and was replaced by Dope director Rick Famuyiwa, who also stepped down, causing the film to be pushed back from its original March 2018 release date. Back then, the film was simply called The Flash. At San Diego Comic-Con 2017, Warner Bros. revealed the new title Flashpoint, whose story arc signifies a very important moment in Flash history that we only recently saw play out on The Flash television show starring Grant Gustin.

DC Creative Officer and acclaimed Flash writer Geoff Johns told Entertainment Weekly in July, "There's elements in it that we're going to be playing into that we couldn't do anywhere else. The scale of it, the Batman story of it all."

It's still unclear which Batman Johns was referring to when it comes to the film. In the classic Flashpoint arc, Bruce Wayne's father, Thomas, is actually the Dark Knight. This is also the case in the animated version of The Flashpoint Paradox. And with rumors of Ben Affleck's shaky commitment to the character making the rounds, there's speculation Flashpoint could mean big things for the future of Batman in the DCEU.

"What fans understand when they hear 'Flashpoint' would be almost like hearing a word like 'crisis,'" Ezra Miller, who portrays Barry Allen, told EW. "We start to understand that our precious DC universe will inevitably be torn asunder to an endless, headache-inducing fabric of multiversality. The DC Hyper-Extended Multiverse, as I plan to call it. Quote me!"

If rumors prove true, Batman won't be the only big-name character set to appear in the film. The Hashtag Show reported that fans could also meet The Rogues, classic Flash villains from the comics and TV series. Killer Frost, Captain Cold and Heatwave are all characters we've met on The CW. Reverse-Flash, quite possibly the best-known speedster villain, is rumored to appear in the film. Cyborg and Wonder Woman are also on the list.

Flashpoint refers to an event caused by Barry Allen running back in time to prevent the death of his mother, not realizing his actions had consequences. In that case, traveling back in time created an alternate timeline known as the Flashpoint Paradox, which saw Barry Allen wake up to a reality in which he wasn't The Flash. The end of the arc gave way to DC's New 52, a controversial reboot which wiped out decades of continuity.
