'The Flash' Season 5: Jesse L. Martin Taking Medical Leave for Back Injury

Joe West hasn't had much screen time so far in The Flash Season 5, and it didn't go unnoticed among the fanbase. After the second episode, many viewers were concerned about Jesse L. Martin (this one included). He was almost always sitting in his scenes, which were few and far between to begin with. Now, Entertainment Weekly reports Martin will take medical leave from the series.

The leave of absence is due to a back injury during the show's summer hiatus. The character's absence will be written into the story, according to TV Line. The length of his absence is unclear at this time. Here is the official statement.

"Jesse Martin is taking a medical leave of absence from The Flash. We wish him a full and speedy recovery and look forward to his return as Detective Joe West."

The absence comes on the heels of the introduction of two new Flash family characters: Nora West Allen and Jenna West. Nora is Joe's granddaughter from the future and Jenna is Joe's new daughter. It will be interesting to see how The Flash writes out such an important character, but he will be missed. Perhaps he'll go visit Wally?

Any other theories? Sound off in the comments.
