'The Flash' Season 5 Brings on Familiar Speedster as Series Regular

Jessica Parker Kennedy has been promoted to series regular in The Flash Season 5, according to Entertainment Weekly. Parker, dubbed "mystery girl" for half of Season 4, was revealed to be Nora West-Allen (Iris and Barry's speedster daughter from the future) in the finale episode.

Nora reversed time to help her father defeat The Thinker. She later appears at the West household, proclaiming, "I made a big mistake." Parker's casting means The Flash will address that cliffhanger, which could have devastating effects on the rest of the season. To be fair, if Nora didn't help Barry, there's a chance he would have died, preventing birth. But, as Flash fans know, time travel and manipulation can have harmful effects. Just ask Barry...

Barry went back in time to prevent his mother's death at the end of The Flash Season 2. This resulted in a "Flashpoint" timeline in Season 3 where everything was different — Barry grew up without powers and never became The Flash. Correcting the Flashpoint timeline gave rise to even more consequences. Before Flashpoint, John Diggle had a daughter. After Flashpoint, John Diggle had a son. Nora is far from off the hook with this latest Flash time-travel debacle. While her mistake will undoubtedly cause problems Team Flash, it does give the show an opportunity to explore how Iris and Barry navigate parenthood, an opportunity the writers wouldn't have without time travel.

It also paves way to resolve unanswered questions from Season 4. For example, there seems to be some sort of speed force language Barry and Nora know that nobody else does. Remember those weird symbols Barry drew all over the walls when he returned from the speed force earlier in Season 4? Nora is familiar with those too… and it can't be a coincidence.

In a post-finale interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Flash boss Todd Helbing teased why Nora came to the present timeline. "You're gonna learn about why she chose those four times and how they're gonna play into not only the mistake that she made, but the consequences for somebody like her, a speedster traveling from the future to the past, and what that means for Barry and the team," he said.
