Florida Man Arrested for Selling Drugs Dresses up As Doctor to Flee From Police

A Florida man arrested for selling drugs tried to escape from police custody dressed as a doctor, deputies said.

James "Poppa" Jenkins Jr., of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, was arrested on Monday on an active drug warrant for selling opiates within 1,000 feet of a school.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said the 71-year-old Jenkins was taken to a local hospital after complaining of chest pain.

He was taken to North Okaloosa Medical Center for evaluation after being arrested on Still Boulevard in Crestview, Florida, during a traffic stop by a sheriff's deputy.

As deputies waited for discharge paperwork to be completed, Jankins came out of his room dressed as a doctor. He was wearing blue scrubs and a stethoscope, the sheriff's office said.

Jenkins tried to run out of the hospital's emergency room doors, ignoring the deputy's commands to stop. He was soon apprehended.

He claimed that someone at the hospital brought him the scrubs, according to the sheriff's office. However, hospital staff said the scrubs Jenkins wore don't belong to them.

"James 'Poppa' Jenkins Jr. was arrested on a warrant for selling opiates," the sheriff's office tweeted, alongside a picture of Jenkins taken during his arrest.

Jenkins is seen in the image with his hands raised and wearing a purple shirt, black suspenders and several rings.

"He complained of chest pain and was taken to a local hospital. He later emerged from his room dressed as a doctor, wearing blue scrubs and a stethoscope, and tried to run. The deputy wasn't fooled. #Fail"

The investigation is continuing, the sheriff's office said.

Along with the narcotics charge, Jenkins is now also facing new charges of resisting arrest without violence and escape, jail records show.

News of Jenkins' arrest prompted some to make jokes on the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page.

"This like a Scooby Doo and Shaggy getaway attempt," one commenter wrote. Another added: "Another slice of life on the Panhandle. Never a dull moment."

The incident comes after a woman accused of shoplifting tried to get away from Okaloosa County sheriff's deputies on a bicycle before taking her top off last month.

Courtney Elizabeth Backes, 32, was seen riding and weaving down the center of Highway 98 in Okaloosa Island, between Fort Walton Beach and Destin, in September, the Miami Herald reported. When a sheriff's deputy asked Backes to stop, she told him: "Make me."
