Florida Man, 73, Strangled His Wife of 50 Years Because She Wanted to Take Their Money and Leave Him

A 73-year-old man is accused of strangling his wife of 50 years to death after she said she was going to leave him and take all their money with her.

Ronald Strouse, of Lake Wells, Florida, has been arrested on suspicion of the first-degree murder of his wife, Susan Strouse, 72, after attacking her at their home on the afternoon of June 11.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said they received a call from Ronald Strouse round 4:30 p.m. saying that his wife is dead following a physical altercation between the pair. When officers arrived at the scene, the 73-year-old was waiting out on his front porch for them.

Susan Strouse was later found on the living room floor with severe bruising across her body, including on her arms, neck, jaw, and eye, which were consistent with the victim having been battered.

According to the affidavit, Ronald Strouse told police his wife said she wanted to leave him, take all their money, and move out of their home. He added that Susan Strouse would not tell him why she wanted to leave him and that "they only argued that night."

Susan Strouse then made her husband a sandwich for lunch, which he said he did not eat. Later that day, the suspect approached Susan Strouse and repeatedly asked her why she wanted to leave him.

After she refused to tell him why she wanted to leave, police said Ronald Strouse grabbed his wife and pulled her to the floor, where they began to wrestle. After straddling on top of her, the 73-year-old allegedly put his hands around his wife's neck and began choking her.

After Susan Strouse stopped struggling, the suspect waited a few minutes and then dialed 911.

The affidavit states there was probable cause that the defendant "committed the criminal offense of 1st degree murder, when the defendant willfully and intentionally choked and battered the victim.

"The defendant made a conscious decision with a premeditated design to choke and strike the victim with his hands until she was deceased," it added.

The Polk County Medical Examiner, Dr. Stephen Nelson, ruled the cause of death as homicide by manual strangulation, reports The Ledger.

"This was a particularly brutal murder. We aren't sure why Ronald Strouse murdered his wife of 50 years, but one thing we are sure of is that he will be held accountable for his actions," Polk Sheriff Grady Judd said.

Ronald Strouse was later booked into the Polk County Jail with no bond ahead of his first court appearance.
