Man Squeezes Into Wendy's Drive-thru Window to Try and Steal Cash Register

Police in Florida are searching for a man who was seen forcing his way into a Wendy's drive-thru window and then attempting to rob the cash register.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Kelvin Barnes, was captured on surveillance footage pulling up at the drive-thru in Tampa at around 11 p.m. on Sunday, August 2.

An employee at the fast-food restaurant told the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office that Barnes and his passenger for "some unknown reason became belligerent" while placing their order.

Barnes is then said to have exited the vehicle and walked to the front of the store, where he was met by an employee. Barnes is alleged to have threatened to start a physical fight with the worker who approached him.

The surveillance footage shows Barnes walking to the drive-thru window and forcing his upper body inside.

The suspect then grabs a number of cups and straws and throws them across the kitchen floor and at the workers. The suspect also reaches for the cash drawer, but drops it on the floor.

As he tries to pick up the cash drawer from the ground, several Wendy's workers rush to the window and the suspect retreats. Barnes is seen banging on the window and yelling at the workers as those he was with attempt to pull him away.

Barnes then got back into his gray 2020 Nissan Maxima, with a Tennessee license plate 2V72W7, and drove away.

During the investigation, it was found that Barnes was driving a rental car and the rental company is in the process of filing a failure-to-return report with the Tampa International Airport Police Department.

The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office is now asking for the public's help in locating the suspect, who is wanted on suspicion of burglary, criminal mischief, and petit theft charges.

Barnes has a Georgia driver's license and has no known local address, deputies said.

"We have clear surveillance video of this suspect and are asking everyone to take a good look and call us if they know where Kelvin Barnes is hiding," Sheriff Chad Chroniste said in a statement.

"He didn't get away with any money, but the damage and hostility this restaurant and its employees faced is unacceptable and we will make sure Barnes learns his lesson."

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at (813) 247-8200.
