Football Fans Catch Falling Cat With American Flag in Incredible Video

While we are used to seeing football players do skillful moves during games, at Miami Hurricanes' recent home opener against Appalachian State it was the fans that produced the stand-out catch.

But instead of snatching the ball out of the air, the surreal moment saw a group catch a falling cat with a flag. Yes, really.

The black and white animal somehow managed to get inside the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, on Saturday September 11 and found itself dangling from the upper deck during the first quarter of the game.

In a clip captured by a Twitter user known as @ReakinHavoc we can see the petrified animal clinging on by one paw from the façade.

In the video, which can be viewed here, the whole crowd is watching on in panic, as one man wearing an orange shirt leans down to try and reach the feline.

The cat, unable to hold on for any longer, then plunges into the crowd below which is ready to catch it using an American flag as a net.

As the animal bounces on the flag, the whole stadium erupted into rapturous applause and cheers.

Speaking to The Associated Press, Craig Cromer, a facilities manager at the University of Miami, explained: "They were trying to grab it from above and they couldn't reach it but they were scaring it downward.

"It hung there for a little while with its two front paws, then one paw, then I was like, 'Oh my goodness, it's coming soon.'"

Cromer and his wife are Miami Hurricanes season ticket holders, and they bring a flag with them to every game. Once they saw the cat's struggle from above they proceeded to unhook the flag from the railing and held it out for the cat to fall onto.

He detailed the tense moment, stating: "It hung there for a little while with its two front paws, then one paw, then I was like, 'Oh my goodness, it's coming soon.'"

The cat ran into the student section which was close to its landing spot, and reportedly did not show any signs of injury.

Miami coach Manny Diaz did not see the incident first hand but did say that he would offer the animal a role on the team.

"I don't know anything about that or what was going on. But I'll tell you, if the cat will help us in our red-zone offense I'm going to see if we can give it a scholarship," Diaz joked.

Perhaps the cat's luck rubbed off on the home team, for they won against Appalachian State 25-23.
