Forbes Names Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Highest-Paid Actor Of The Year

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson earned $89.4 million in the last year, according to Forbes' Wednesday list of the top 10 highest-paid actors. He secured the No. 1 spot, beating out stars like Chris Hemsworth, Bradley Cooper and Will Smith.

He was listed as the second-highest-paid actor of 2018, with a net worth of $124 million.

He came behind George Clooney's $239 million. The star acquired a majority of that money after selling his tequila company, Casamigos.

Clooney aside, Johnson is reportedly receiving $23.5 million for the movie Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, set to release in December of this year. He is also still receiving back-end money—roughly 15 percent—from previous blockbusters.

This announcement was made weeks after the release of The Rock's most recent film success, Hobbs & Shaw, a spin-off of The Fast and the Furious. It brought in a reported $437 million worldwide. The actor took to Instagram to celebrate the news with his 154 million followers, writing "Good 2nd week of box office business. $437M worldwide. Nice momentum as we roll into China this coming weekend. Thanks everyone for supporting our lil' spin-off known as @hobbsandshaw."

However, that success may not come solely from Johnson's career as an actor, but his establishment as a personal brand as well.

According to Leonard Kim, personal branding expert at Influence Tree and author of forthcoming book Ditch the Act: Reveal the Surprising Power of the Real You for Greater Success, what sets the iconic actor apart from his colleagues is his willingness to show people "exactly who he is."

"He [Johnson] engages himself into conversations on social media, unlike many other actors who keep their communication channels one way," Kim told Newsweek. "This allows people to see a more human, holistic side to him."

In addition to his work on the silver screen, Forbes reported Johnson brings in $700,000 per episode of hit HBO series Ballers, and "seven figures" for business deals outside of acting, like his product line with Under Armour.

The most successful people-turned-brands are those "we can see ourselves in," Kim said. "The Rock plays himself in everything he does and is not trying to reshape his entire personality. Fans feel as if they know him."

The other stars in the top three include Marvel movie heavyweights like Hemsworth, who comes in second at $76.4 million, and Robert Downey Jr., who comes in third at $66 million.

Next on the list are two international celebrities: Canadian actor Akshay Kumar and action star Jackie Chan. Cooper appears again for the first time since 2015 after last year's commercial success of A Star is Born.

Adam Sandler, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, and Smith, who just saw a recent success in the Disney live-action reboot of Aladdin, round out the list.
