Former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour will be fined after a loaded pistol was found in his briefcase as he attempted to pass through airport security.

Barbour, who served as RNC chairman in the mid-1990s and governor from 2004 to 2012, told the Associated Press that he was trying to board a flight on January 2 from Jackson to Washington D.C. when he was arrested.

Barbour said he forgot he was carrying the firearm, which he had put in the suitcase after an assistant took it from his car.

"This was absent mindedness and nobody's fault but mine," he said.

The weapon was a .38 caliber revolver loaded with five bullets, according to a Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman.

Barbour, who was travelling to the capital for his role as a lobbyist, said TSA officers and police acted professionally.

"They did exactly what they should have done, which was treat me like anybody else," Barbour said.

The fine for having a loaded firearm at an airport checkpoint begins at $3,920, according to a TSA website.
