Former O.J. Simpson Prosecutor Chris Darden Defending Nipsey Hussle's Accused Shooter Eric Holder

The man accused of shooting and killing Los Angeles-based rapper Nipsey Hussle has tapped a prosecutor from the O.J. Simpson murder trial to be his defense attorney.

Eric Holder, 29, who was arrested and charged with the shooting death of Hussle, will have Chris Darden defending him. During his appearance before a jam-packed courtroom secured by armed guards Thursday, Holder was charged with one count of murder and two more counts of attempted murder. He was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. Holder stood behind a glass structure while officers surrounded him—most likely because of online threats directed at Holder after he was named the suspect and his subsequent arrest Tuesday—as Darden entered a not guilty plea.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Teresa T. Sullivan set Holder's bail at $5 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Hussle, 33, was a notorious rapper and entrepreneur who was shot outside his Marathon Clothing Company store in Los Angeles last Sunday. Holder was named the suspect on Monday and eventually arrested the next day. At a vigil Monday night outside the Marathon Clothing store near a Crenshaw Boulevard intersection, several people were hurt and trampled during a fight.

Darden's name is most notably attached to the Simpson trial in the 1990's, when Simpson was aquitted of the murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ron Goldman. But since then, Darden has worked mostly defense in murder cases, according to The Times.

The report in the Los Angeles Times indicates Hussle and Holder had gotten into an argument earlier on Sunday, and that Holder allegedly returned with a gun and began shooting at Hussle and two other men in the parking lot. Once gunshots were fired, Hussle fell to the ground and the other men fled from the gunfire.

The funeral services for Hussle hadn't been announced as of Thursday night, but metropolitan cities across the U.S. began holding their own memorials for the Grammy-nominated rapper.

Once it was learned that Holder's attorney was Darden, the social media world began taking jabs at the defense lawyer.
