‘Fortnite’ Light Machine Gun Releasing in 3.5 Content Update

Fortnite 3.5 will receive a Content Update over the next few days, and it brings a Light Machine Gun to Battle Royale. The news was revealed via an in-game post Monday evening.

As usual the teaser doesn’t tell us much, but it describes the gun as a “new LMG weapon [with a] fast rate of fire, large magazine and slow reload.” It’s unclear when the update will officially publish, but the previous Vending Machine Content Update quietly deployed on Wednesday in the late morning hours. Epic tends to be pretty consistent with its release times as long as its network behaves, so we anticipate a similar arrival plan this week.

Fortnite LMG news ‘Fortnite’s Light Machine Gun has a large magazine but slow reload speed. Epic Games

Fortnite ’s Light Machine Gun update marks the second Content Update using Epic’s new deployment schedule. For those who missed the news earlier this month, Content Updates differ from standard ones because they don’t require a file download or intentional server downtime. With that in mind, the number of potential fixes in Content Updates is significantly reduced. While new items, loot rates and weapon balance values can be easily tweaked on the fly, Battle Royale and Save The World enthusiasts shouldn’t expect too much from this week’s patch.

It’s hard to know how the LMG contributes to Battle Royale’s meta without testing it first, but we’ve still got a few ideas. Given that the graphic seems to indicate it’s an Uncommon item, it might be a slightly revised take on the Minigun. It could have less spread and a faster startup time than the mini, but that advantage would theoretically be balanced out by the LMG’s slower reload speed. Because Fortnite already has similar guns, we don’t expect the LMG to cause a major disruption in gameplay.

In addition to the Light Machine Gun, players can also expect the reworked 50v50 mode that was supposed to arrive last week. As implied by its name, 50v50 groups players into two large teams of 50 players each. The 20-minute match type offers 10 minutes for looting, five minutes to fight and five additional minutes to finish off any straggling fighters with a rapidly approaching storm. The new version features a more defined battle area and minor loot tweaks.

On the Save The World side, we assume we’ll see a new questline and a possible new addition to the shop. Thankfully, most of the necessary Hero balance overhauls were taken care of with last week’s patch.

That’s all we know about the 3.5 Content Update and the Light Machine Gun, but we’ll do our best to provide more information as it becomes available.

Fortnite is in early access across PS4, Xbox One, PC and iOS. The Light Machine Gun should arrive on all four platforms simultaneously.
