Fortnite fans were shocked Friday afternoon when a mysterious purple Cube suddenly spawned from Rift lightning on the border of Paradise Palms. With a month left to go in Season 5, here are our five best theories to explain what it all means.

...
1) Time Travel: There was lots of chatter about time travel heading into Season 5, and we haven't seen too many signs of it yet. Rifts dropped anchors and horse-drawn carriages onto the Battle Royale map, but Loot Lake never transformed into a pirate cove and Retail Row isn't exactly a Victorian-era bookstore.

Now that we've seen Tomato Town become Tomato Temple, however, discussions about Fortnite and time travel have stated picking up steam. Assuming this new point of interest is truly from an ancient era, other spots on the map may be changing too. Maybe the Cube will shoot Rift lightning that envelops and transforms more named locations on the map.
2) Influence By The Gods: Even stranger than the existence of the Cube itself are the properties it has. While those who hang near it get a free armor refill, others who shoot it or strike it with a Pickaxe feel its wrath of electric geometry. This Cube doesn't talk, but it seems to have a basic consciousness.

...
In fact, taking that notion one step further, the Cube acts almost God-like. Those who are nice are rewarded, but those who act against it are punished by lightning strikes. At the start of Season 5, religion was a popular subject of debate. Teasers featured images of Norse-inspired axes and a Japanese Kitsune mask. The season's top-tier skin is called Ragnarok as well, which has strong ties to Thor. Are Thor and other global Gods about to invade Battle Royale?
3) Aliens: Any self-respecting theory list needs aliens, so we'll throw our hat into the ring. Even if the Cube isn't from the land of Gods, it certainly comes from a world that isn't ours. Considering the alien creatures that already exist in Save the World, it makes sense for those foes to eventually make their way to Battle Royale.

...
The subject of this article is essentially a large box. When it comes to creating theories, then, it's worth asking what's inside it. Could there be a horde of monsters or a UFO lurking below? Are the lightning strikes actually alien lasers? The tagline for Season 5 is "Worlds Collide," so maybe the Battle Royale world is about to get extra terrestrial.
4) The Visitor Returns: The storyline for Fortnite Season 4 focused on the Visitor coming to the Battle Royale map on the back of a Meteorite and building Rocket to get home. We haven't seen the Visitor since, so this Cube might relate to his story.

...
Evidence referenced by those like YouTube's Trizdo makes this argument even more compelling. Blockbuster loading screens from last season feature symbols similar to those on the Cube itself. The suggestion worth making, then, is that the Visitor actually constructed this Cube for reasons unknown. Given his history we can't imagine his intentions are good, but it's still worth thinking about.
5) An Enforcer Tool: Another popular theory related to skins is that this Cube might somehow tie to the Enforcer outfit players recently unlocked by finishing the Road Trip Challenges. With a name like Enforcer, the implication is that this character has something to protect. The Cube may be a mechanism for doing that.
After all, the Cube actively punishes those who do bad things to it. The lightning strike may be a means of restoring order in this messy world full of rifts, transforming locations and multiplayer combat.
Fortnite is in early access across PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and mobile. The purple Cube is identical across all platforms.
What do you think of the purple Cube and lightning strikes? Which of these five theories is most plausible? Tell us in the comments section!
