Fox News Host Says Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Questioning of Having Children Could Lead to End of Civilization

Fox News hosts on Tuesday slammed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) for arguing that young Americans should consider whether they want to give birth to children amid concerns about the potentially catastrophic consequences of climate change, suggesting that the freshman Democrat could be responsible for the the end of civilization.

In an Instagram Live video over the weekend, Ocasio-Cortez questioned whether it was ethical to have children when "our planet is going to face disaster if we don't turn this ship around." The self-described democratic socialist cited a poll that found younger people may choose not to have children due to concerns about the changing enviornment.

"It's basically like, there is a scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult and it does lead, I think young people, to have a legitimate question. Ya know, should—is it okay to still have children?" the congresswoman said in her kitchen, while chopping vegetables.

"Not just financially, because people are graduating with 20, 30, 100 thousand dollars of student loan debt, so they can't even afford to have kids in the house, but there's also just this basic moral question, like, what do we do?"

“There’s scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult. And it does lead young people to have a legitimate question: is it okay to still have children?”

During a segment on Fox & Friends earlier today, host Pete Hegseth criticized Ocasio-Cortez for posing the question.

"Not 'should I have children,' which is an individual choice, everybody can choose what they want, but 'is it okay?,' that's putting a moral lens on it," he commented. "Are you a bad person if you have kids because you're going to ruin their lives and you're going to ruin the planet because they're going to have a carbon footprint that you're responsible for?"

"Eventually, if people stop having children, guess what, none of us are going to be here," co-host Jillian Mele said. "Like, there's not even going to be Earth anymore."

Co-host Ainsley Earhardt added: "I don't want my daughter raised in a socialist environment. I mean, look at Venezuela. That's what's bad for the kids."

"And what's unhealthy for society is when they can't replace themselves," Hegseth continued. "Demographics say 2.1 [children per household] is a healthy, growing country. She said the world is going to end in 10 to 12 years, this is like World War II, this is her religion."

In recent weeks, Ocasio-Cortez has championed the Green New Deal, which proposes to eradicate America's carbon footprint in the next decade. Amid pushback from conservatives, the congresswoman challenged those who opposed the deal to come up with a better one themselves. "Yup. If you don't like the #GreenNewDeal, then come up with your own ambitious, on-scale proposal to address the global climate crisis.Until then, we're in charge - and you're just shouting from the cheap seats," she tweeted late last week.
