Fox News Hosts Applaud Stacey Abrams for Speech on Subjects 'President Didn't Talk About at All' in State of the Union

Fox News hosts praised former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams for her delivery and for touching on subjects the president neglected as she gave the official Democratic response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday.

The good reviews were significant from a news network that often lavishes praise on Trump. And State of the Union responses are known for usually failing to match the grandeur of the presidential address in the House chamber.

"There are a lot of Americans who are struggling, and I thought she seemed to get more to what people's lives are like in the reality," Fox News anchor Chris Wallace said. "Also, she talked about some subjects like education, which the president didn't talk about at all, or climate change, which the president didn't talk about at all."

Abrams in her response criticized the White House's handling of school shootings and said that the "most urgent work" at hand was to ensure that the younger generations prosper.

"Children deserve an excellent education from cradle to career. We owe them safe schools and the highest standards, regardless of ZIP code," Abrams said. "Yet this White House responds timidly while first-graders practice active shooter drills and the price of higher education grows ever steeper."

Fox News host Laura Ingraham, a fierce conservative and frequent champion of Trump, said she had to admit that Abrams "did have presence tonight" and did "much better than some of the people in the past few years," including last year when Democratic Representative Joe Kennedy appeared to be sweating as he delivered the Democratic response.

"Look, I think she is kind of presenting an alternative universe to what really is going on. Blue-collar wages, as The Washington Post had to report in September, finally blue-collar wages are going up, the middle class is feeling it," Ingraham said. "But, she did the best I think she could with this economy that's booming by all accounts."

Abrams bashed Trump for the longest-ever government shutdown, a matter he did not bring up in his address. She recounted volunteering to help federal workers who were furloughed and struggling due to the lack of pay.

"Making their livelihoods a pawn for political games is a disgrace," Abrams said. "The shutdown was a stunt engineered by the president of the United States, one that defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people—but our values."

Fox News anchor Bret Baier said Abrams "is clearly a rising star in the Democratic Party, someone who exudes confidence," and someone who Democrats are hoping will run for a Senate seat in 2020.

Abrams became a national figure after her gubernatorial bid in the midterm elections last November, which she narrowly lost. She was the first black woman to deliver the official Democratic response to the State of the Union.
