Gabriel DeWitt Wilson, Suspect in Stop & Shop Shooting, Arrested by Nassau County Police

The Nassau County Police Department in New York announced on Tuesday that it has apprehended the suspect in the Stop & Shop shooting that left at least one person dead.

In a tweet, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran wrote that the suspected shooter, who was previously identified as 30-year-old Gabriel DeWitt Wilson, "is in custody." The Nassau County Police Department confirmed the arrest in a tweet from its own account, saying, "the subject has been apprehended and taken into custody. Our thoughts are with those who were killed and injured today."

The announcement comes shortly after police identified Wilson as a "person of interest" in the shooting. According to WCBS-TV in New York, Wilson is believed to be an employee at the Stop & Shop where the shooting occurred.

According to a tweet from the police department, Wilson was described as a 6'2" man that was last seen wearing a black baseball hat and a black sweatshirt. He was recently seen heading westbound on Hempstead Turnpike, according to police.

Police first reported the shooting shortly after 12 p.m. local time on Tuesday, writing in a tweet, "There has been an active shooter situation at the West Hempstead Stop & Shop."

"The #NassauCountyPD is canvassing the area & nearby schools have been notified to lock down & secure their buildings. The subject has not been apprehended yet & we ask that area residents remain indoors," the tweet added.

Shortly after the shooting, the suspect reportedly fled the scene carrying a black handgun.

While speaking with WCBS-TV in New York, Carolyn Gusoff, an employee at the Stop & Shop where the shooting occurred, said that she heard around five to six gunshots near the manager's office. Another employee described the situation as "incredibly frightening."

"I finished waiting on my customer, she was almost done, and I ran out, I left, and I sat in my car in the parking lot. Then I asked the officer if I should leave. I'm over with all the employees sitting here," one of the store's cashiers told WCBS-TV.

Photos and videos posted to Twitter showed the scene outside the Stop & Shop, with police and ambulances surrounding the area.

"At least 1 dead, 2 injured after 'workplace violence' related shooting at a grocery store in West Hempstead, New York. Suspect not in custody," Twitter user UA News wrote alongside video of the scene.

In a statement issued after the shooting, Stop & Shop wrote, "We are shocked and heartbroken by this act of violence that occurred at our store located at 50 Cherry Valley Road in West Hempstead, NY, today. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, our associates, customers and the first responders who have responded heroically to this tragic situation."

The statement continues: "At this time, we are cooperating fully with local law enforcement on the investigation. The store will remain closed until further notice, and we appreciate the Long Island community's support during this difficult time."

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo also issued a statement on the shooting, saying, "I'm praying for the victims, and my heart breaks for their families and loved ones."
