Georgia Man Raped and Threatened Girlfriend With Machete After She Spoke to Another Man in a Club, Then Came After Roommate: Police

A man hunted by police for allegedly raping his girlfriend and threatening her roommate after a night out in Georgia has been apprehended in Florida.

The suspect has now been identified as Elvin Virgilio Yanez-Amaya, aged 27. He is being held at the Walton County Jail on several charges unrelated to accusations of felony sexual assault, the Gwinnett County Police Department announced in a brief media update yesterday.

On Monday, Georgia deputies circulated images of Yanez-Amaya taken from a social media account linked to an alias he had been using. In two of the photographs, the suspect could be seen posing with firearms. Police confirmed his whereabouts were initially unknown.

On April 13, a woman called the department and reported she had been raped by her boyfriend. It emerged the suspect also attempted to sodomize the woman's friend, police said. WXIA-TV reported that he told the roommate "you are going to be mine now, whether you like it or not."

An incident report obtained by the news outlet said the Hispanic man was using the alias Elvin Amaya. It said he was angry because his partner talked to other men in a club.

The same evening, Yanez-Amaya had allegedly consumed alcohol and meth. Returning home from the club, he forced himself on his crying girlfriend while brandishing a machete before threatening her roommate the next morning, police said. WXIA-TV reported that deputies who were called to the scene found the weapon under a couch—but Yanez-Amaya was gone.

The victims have not been named. The Gwinnett County Police Department's Special Victims Unit confirmed they had requested privacy and did not want to be interviewed by media.

One victim told police she had been reluctant to immediately report the alleged assault because the culprit had made threats against members of her family.

In Georgia, Yanez-Amaya is wanted on four warrants: Aggravated sodomy, criminal attempt to commit aggravated sodomy and two counts of aggravated assault. Inmates records from the Walton County Jail confirm he was detained in Florida on May 31, held on $100,000 bond.

In custody, Yanez-Amaya's address was listed as Inlet Beach. He was detained on four charges: giving false information, assault with intent to commit a felony, abuse of a child without great bodily harm and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

He is now awaiting trial in Walton County, records said. It was not immediately clear if or when he would be transferred to face trial relating to the allegations from the women in Gwinnett County.
